Bornholm in Denmark
In the middle of the
Baltic Sea.
The place where adventure, culture, charm and Danish
cosiness unite in a great experience.
On this little
Danish island Bornholm that is is
located in the midst of the blue Baltic
Sea you have a unique opportunity to experience a
Scandinavia in miniature on an area of only 30x40
kilometres. It offers a steep dramatic coast of cliffs
interrupted by long, white, sandy beaches bordering sand
dunes and heather covered heaths. You will find vast
landscapes with fertile fields and well-kept farms as well
as forests, lakes and, believe it or not, one of the highest
mountains of Denmark – Rytterknaegten. Along the streets of
the fishing villages you find grapevines, hollyhocks and
mulberry trees. All this combined has given Bornholm many
beautiful nick names over time: Sunshine Island,
Nightinggales, Wild Cherry Island and the most common – The
Baltic Pearl.
The ferries from
Rönne to Ystad are sometimes named after freedom fighters
from the days in the 17th century when Bornholm
belonged to Sweden. This should be seen as more of a tribute
to the heroes of the island than a dissociation from
Sweden.
Bornholm today
welcomes visitors from every nation, including Swedes! And
it is very convenient to get there. Two conventional ferries
and one high speed catamaran operate the route from Ystad to
Rönne, with seven daily departures in each direction during
peak season. The trip takes 2½ hours with the conventional
ferries and 80 minutes with the catamaran. It is easy to get
around the island. The coast line measures about 110
kilometres and during the trip you get acquainted with most
of Bornholm’s cosy villages and small towns, many of which
boast smoke-houses offering newly smoked herring with
side-dishes of your choice.
It is not only
worshippers of sun and bathing that find Bornholm an
attractive destination. There is a wide array of activities
– countless hiking and biking
trials meander through the beautiful landscape,
3 well-respected golf courses are
available and those of you thirsty for culture will be happy
to find museums, churches and galleries.
We hope that the vacation of your choice will be a visit to
Bornholm and that we will have the honour and pleasure of
assisting in the planning
